Cut pile or plush carpets are generally constructed from nylon, which is the most resilient fiber available and will perform best under heavy traffic conditions. However, they may also be constructed of polyester or olefin. It should be noted that these fibers are more inherent to “crushing”, and may not perform as well as carpeting constructed from nylon in heavily traffic areas. Most plush carpets are available in 12′ widths with some offered in 15′ widths.
Selecting this style of carpeting can sometimes be the most difficult of all of the carpet styles. While a carpet may feel like it will perform well, sometimes you need to take a closer look to see the characteristics of each piece. A simple way to test the life expectancy of cut pile carpet is to look at how many twists are on each individual strand and how dense the carpet feels when compared to other carpets. The higher the twist and the denser the carpet, the better the quality and the longer the carpet will perform. However this is not a full proof method. Manufacturers sometimes rate the carpeting on a scale of 1 – 5 to give the consumer an idea of how the carpeting will perform under normal conditions and how well it will hold its appearance. You will also want to get the weight (in ounces) of the carpeting for comparison purposes. Generally speaking, an ounce weight of 30 or above is best for higher traffic areas.
When selecting this style of carpeting, you will want to see if the carpet is a staple fiber or a continuous filament. Staple nylons are known to “shed” because of the loose fibers that remain in the carpeting after it is sheered. This is not a manufacturing defect, rather a characteristic of this carpet, and should go away after continuous vacuuming for about 6-9 months. You will also want to find out if the carpeting is classified as a “track-less” carpet or a velveteen plush. A velveteen or Saxony is designed to show sweeper and shoe prints and is generally used in more formal settings. While the track-less carpet will show some marks, it is not as predominant as the Saxony styles.
